Traditionally RLE compression schemes are part of the following image data format:

BMP - Microsoft Bitmap

Bitmap images with a colour resolution of 4 and 8 bit can be compressed starting with BMP version 3 as defined since Microsoft Windows 3.x. Other colour resolutions are not supported and have to be stored uncompressed.
