JPEG: Fields of Application
The main field of application for JPEG is the coding of photos or photo realistic representations with major focus on efficient utilization of capacity (memory, data transfer rates, etc.). Especially the broad availability is one of the characteristic strengths of JPEG.
For drawings or monochromatic images other formats are more suitable, e.g. GIF. The same applies, if simple images or smaller pictures have to be embedded into an environment with background colours.
The basic implementation of JPEG (Baseline Process) is not well-suited for professional printing preproduction. Frequently problems arise with compression artifacts, the rudimentary colour systems or colour mismatches. Professional solutions are available, but mostly not compatible with the basic formats.
