ZIP

The ZIP format was developed and successfully established in the market by Phil Katz who had founded PKWARE, Inc.

The first applications supporting the ZIP format were PKZIP and PKUNZIP from PKWARE, Inc. that are still in use in a wide-spread.

Originally Phil Katz has started to support the ARC-Format with his application PKARC. But after legal conflicts with Software Enhancement Associates (SEA), which successfully claimed the copyright for ARC, he had developed his own format.
