BWT: Applications

The Burrows Wheeler transformation is primarily used in the context of BZIP2 that is itself part of 7z and ZIP.

Data formats BWT:

• BZIP2
• 7z
• ZIP

Many in particular commercial applications support BZIP2 only for decoding. The freeware 7-Zip generates BZIP2 data both in its own 7z format, and in the context of ZIP.

As far as known, there is not any restriction by patents. In the context of different projects source code is freely or under GPL available.
